Whole-brain computation of cognitive versus acoustic errors in music: A mismatch negativity study
نویسندگان
چکیده
Previous studies have evidenced how the local prediction of physical stimulus features may affect neural processing incoming stimuli. Less known are effects cognitive priors on predictive processes, and brain computes versus predictions their errors. Here, we determined differential mechanisms underlying errors related to high-level, for melody (rhythm, contour) low-level, acoustic (tuning, timbre). We measured with magnetoencephalography mismatch negativity (MMN) error signal in 104 adults having varying levels musical expertise. discovered that regions involved early processes were primary secondary auditory cortex insula, whereas such as cingulate orbitofrontal cortices recruited melodic priors. The involvement higher-level computing was enhanced musicians, especially cortex, inferior frontal gyrus, supplementary motor area. Overall, findings expand knowledge whole-brain MMN generators, previously mainly confined a network strictly depends type be computed by brain.

Mismatch negativity responses in schizophrenia: a combined fMRI and whole-head MEG study.
OBJECTIVE Mismatch negativity is an event-related brain response sensitive to deviations within a sequence of repetitive auditory stimuli. It is thought to reflect short-term sensory memory and is independent of higher-level cognitive processes. Mismatch negativity response is diminished in patients with schizophrenia. Little is known about the mechanisms of this decreased response, the contrib...

15 صفحه اولMismatch negativity to acoustic differences not differentiated behaviorally.
Mismatch negativity (MMN) reportedly reflects the neurophysiologic detection of acoustic differences, rather than the phonemic categorization of speech sounds. The purpose of the present study was to determine if it is elicited by speech contrasts that are acoustically different but are not differentiated by listeners in behavioral tasks. Experimental stimuli were drawn from a synthetically gen...
متن کاملProcessing of English words with fine acoustic contrasts and simple tones: a mismatch negativity study.
The purpose of this study was to compare the robustness of the event-related potential (ERP) response, called the mismatch negativity (MMN), when elicited by simple tone stimuli (differing in frequency, duration, or intensity) and speech stimuli (CV nonword contrast /de:/ vs. /ge:/ and CV word contrast /del/ vs. /gel/). The study was conducted using 30 young adult subjects (Groups A and B; n = ...
